2011.02.19, Bugis Iluma Mall, The Manhattan Fish Market, Red Hot Treasure

Red Hot Treasure (S$9.90)
Dipping Sauce (Left to right: minced pickle, sour cream, hot sauce)

The Manhattan Fish Market

The Manhattan Fish Market

We were suggested by one of our group members to eat at this restaurant after watching 127 hours at Bugis Mall. The restaurant itself is actually located in the Bugis Mall itself on the 4th floor. As the name tells you, this place offers a variety of American seafood dishes. It's actually a mall-type  restaurant so the price as we can imagine is just pricier than the market's establishments. Since they offer more like American type of seafood dishes, they offer several types of breaded fish fillet with french fries, green salad, and also steamboat dish.

What I ordered actually called the Red Hot Treasure. It's two pieces of oil pan-fried fish fillet with fried rice on the side. Garnished with sambal (hot sauce), two pieces of clams, a sliced of lime and tomato. The food was actually quite good. They cooked the fish lightly with oil while preserving the natural juice and taste that comes from the fish. I think the main ingredients of the fish were the typical salt and pepper but it was good enough for me. The fried rice was actually complemented the fish very well. The fried rice did not taste too salty (as they don't want to over power the taste of the fish) while offering quite light buttery taste to our taste bud. The two clams were ok, nothing too extraordinary out of them :) The sambal was actually quite interesting. I do like sambal actually. When the sambal touches your tongue, it didn't give a spontaneous heat in the beginning. It tasted sweet and slightly tangy... but once you started to swallow the sambal and it hits the back of your tongue the heat starts slowly creeping out and filling your whole mouth with that sensation. It's not too hot (to me at the least), but it was fun. :D

The restaurant also offered another set of dipping sauce that could be shared with another person in your group. The green part was actually sliced-diced-minced-salty pickle... sort of. I didn't quite like it because it didn't offer any strong and unique flavor. I prefer the one that they offer in the market food court better. The white part was the sour cream. Again, nothing special about it. And the last one was another sambal. It's not spicy at all to me. I tasted sourness that comes from it instead of the heat. The flavor profile was similar to tasting Tabasco by itself. You don't taste the heat, instead you only tasted the sourness. If you think that Tabasco is hot, then this one is probably hot enough for you... and you could ignore my opinion about any kind of hot sauce in the coming posts or the previous ones.

Overall: it's a good, comfortable restaurant offering types of seafood dishes that is familiar to us. The ambiance was also nice when I got there. The service was also quite fast considering the restaurant was about 80% full in the Friday night. I would recommend this restaurant if you want to have something that you're already familiar with (either the taste profile or the kind of dish that you had before), but if you're feeling adventurous.... hence this may not be the place for you.

2011.02.10, Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre, 148 Curry Rice, Curry Rice

Curry Rice (S$2.50)
148 Curry Rice

This place is actually located under the same roof as the Hokkien Mee that I rated earlier. I actually visited this place first, then the Hokkien Mee since I was still hungry.

This food vendor only offers one kind of food, that is the curry rice itself. It also served different variations of "add-on" that go with it. To be honest I actually forget what I asked for but in the end I paid S$2.50. The way I picked this place was actually very random. I was indeed to get something with rice so I was starred to the board. Then the lady asked me to look what she offered. Hence, I when I looked what she got, she suddenly already putting the rice on the serving plate. Well, I was hungry so I started ordering food from her.

Overall: The food was actually tasted par, or could even be sub par. I didn't taste much spices. I only got the texture of it and that's it. A little bit of sweetness coming from the curry sauce combined with saltiness that came from the chicken and vegetable. The portion was actually quite generous.

2011.02.10, Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre, Xie Kee, Hokkien Mee

Hokkien Mee (S$3.00)

Xie Kee Hokkien Mee
This place is one of many food vendors located in the Bukit Timah Market & Food Centre. There are probably as many 20+ different food vendors over there. I picked this specific vendor because there was a line of people waiting to buy the food while the cook was still pan frying the mee (noodle). So I tried, hoping for the best as these people expected to be.

It was a major disappointment. I didn't really like the food for some reasons. Let's start with the food itself. It tasted blend. I mean, it tasted salty but that's it. I didn't taste anymore spices that went with the food. I didn't know how he cooked it but probably he simply put the noodle, bean sprout, a shrimp, and other tiny seafood pieces (baby octopus, etc) into a boiling chicken broth in the frying pan. And served it just the way it is. Well, that sucked.

I expected to have noodle with something. Not noodle + bean sprout with something. If the noodle to bean sprout ratio was more like 70:30, I could understand... oh he was trying to cut cost maybe. But if it was more like 50:50 and the portion was too small then it lead to major disappointment. Oh did I mention that the taste was blend? It tasted like salty warm water plus noodle plus bean sprout and more.

Overall: since this is the only food that they offer, I will not go back to this place again. Even though it was only S$3.00 (small) and S$3.50 (bigger size), it's still expensive considering the taste and portion it offered.

2011.02.16, Jurong Kechil, Fei Siong: Fried Rice and Iced Milk Tea

Chicken Fried Rice (S$3.80)

Milk Tea (S$1.10)

Fei Siong Steamboat Seafood

Fei Siong Steamboat Seafood

Although the place looks quiet from far away, this place offers decent food to eat. The price is also reasonable and they offer many variations of food. This is not a restaurant but more like market style eatery. The price actually ranging from S$3-ish to S$30-ish. The more expensive food usually are designed to be shared with several people (like steamboat dishes/ Hot pots).

They offer good portion of fried rice. That also comes with higher price actually, but hey it's still S$3.80. It's a good deal. The fried rice itself is served with chicken and small shrimp that tasted actually quite good. The food was served with iced milk tea.

Overall: this place is actually a nice place to visit. It's also clean. The bigger portion combined with good tasting food and good service make me wants to visit this place again.

2011.02.16, Jurong Kechil, 7th Mile Coffee Shop, Chicken Rice

Chicken Rice (S2.50)
7th Mile Coffee Shop
I had this food for lunch yesterday. The food was ok. It didn't have strong flavor as I wanted to be but overall it was just fine. The spicy sauce (sambal) was not too spicy for me. They garnish the food with slices of cucumber which I think they marinaded it in salty water prior serving.

Overall: The taste was ok although the portion is just a bit too small for me. Nothing fancy about it for $2.50. The service was fine for market vendor. The place was also clean enough with enough breeze.
